Jack Daniels Honey Lemonade

Ready for those hot, sunny days of summer!? Why wait until it's too hot to enjoy it? Whether it's 40 or 70 degrees out, you can retreat to those lazy days of summer with little more than your imagination and a tall, cool glass of Tennessee Lemonade. It's the Jack Daniel's Honey that adds the sweet twang to this classic southern cocktail. One sip is all it takes and... Whooosh!!! There you are rocking to and fro on the front porch, sun on your face with the soothing buzz of cicadas in your ear. Welcome to your endless summer!

Here's the recipe (all the ingredients will be on sale through the month of February here at Quarry Wine & Spirits, except the soda which is available next door at The Fresh Market)...

Jack Daniels Honey Lemonade

1 oz Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey

3/4 oz Tuaca
1 oz Sour Mix
4 oz Lemon-Lime Soda

Combine ingredients in a tall glass over ice. Garnish with a cherry and enjoy!

Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey - Amber yellow in color, this liqueur looks a lot like a bottle of clover honey. The nose is sweet and spicy, with solid cinnamon notes and a light floral undertone. The entry opens with clear honey notes which is quickly backed up by a perfect level of cinnamon. There's more spice here than heat and the spice is absolutely dialed in. The cinnamon fades in the mid-palate and gives way to a subtle milk chocolate note which lingers after a fairly swift finish. There's absolutely no heat in the finish, and for a sweet honey liqueur, it impressively doesn't leave a heavy residue on the palate.

Amarula French Toast

Remember your childhood? One of my fondest memories is of waking up in the morning to the smell of my Grandmothers's "Bubala French Toast." The bouquet of warm buttered bread and cinnamon would waft through the kitchen, up the stairs, and across the hall. It would drift into my room from under the door like a scene out of Dracula. That's the aroma which had me rub my eyes, step into the coziest of slippers, and descend downstairs into the kitchen. There, my apron clad Grandmother would be standing over the stove, skillet in hand. I waited in eager anticipation. I'd listen as the sizzle from the butter coated bread calmed from a loud, rapid crackle to a soft, constant whisper. Then silence until a scrape and a "tink" from her spatula as she plated each slice. Breakfast was so close...

I haven't had Bubala French Toast in a long time. Not sure that I could even make it if I tried. A substitute is in need. This holiday season I choose not the impossible task of replicating Grandma's recipe, but rather, doing something completely different. That's where our Cocktail of the Month steps in: Amarula French Toast. Made with Amarula Cream Liqueur, this drink is sure to give comfort during the cold winter months, just like Grandma's French Toast did. Try it as a dessert, or what the heck, try it for breakfast!

Here's the recipe (all the ingredients will be on sale through the month of December here at Quarry Wine & Spirits, except the milk and cinnamon which is available next door at The Fresh Market)...

Amarula French Toast
1 1/2 oz Amarula Cream Liqueur
1/2 oz Ron Matusalem Rum
1/2 oz Milk

Combine ingredients over cracked ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake and pour into a glass. Lightly dust with cinnamon and swirl with cinnamon stick or a straw.

Amarula Cream Liqueur is a blend of nature's fresh cream and the mysterious taste of the wild Marula fruit. Africa's majestic elephants walk for miles to feast on the sun-ripened Marula fruit which is indigenous to the region's vast subequatorial plains. The hand-picked Marula fruit is fermented, distilled, and matured for two years in French oak before being blended with the finest fresh cream.

Ultimat Purple Martini

Want to ensure victory? Everyone knows that wearing particular garments, chanting certain cheers, and executing intricate routines have all been found to profoundly affect the outcome of televised sporting events. The more rituals you have, the more likely your team will be successful. Watch a game without doing at least one of these things could spell imminent doom for your favorite squad. So in an attempt to better the odds even further, we've come up with the Ultimat Purple Martini. Our scientific based research has shown that consumption of the Ultimat Purple Martini while watching the game nearly guarantees victory. This holds true even if your troop doesn't sport the color purple! Now, if you're among those that only pair sporting events with carbonated malt beverages, know this; even though a bold purple cocktail isn't the most subtle way of supporting your team, it tastes good and your team will win. Case closed. Here's the recipe (all the ingredients will be on sale through the month of November here at Quarry Wine & Spirits, except the cranberry juice which is available next door at The Fresh Market)...

Ultimat Purple Martini
2 oz Ultimat Vodka
1/2 oz Blue Curacao
1/2 oz Cranberry Juice
1/4 oz Grenadine Syrup

Combine first three ingredients over ice in shaker. Shake well. Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Pour grenadine and let sink to bottom.

Ultimat Vodka is the only vodka that is distilled wheat, rye, and potato. Wheat creates a light and subtle smoothness of texture. Rye yields complexity and clarity. And potato adds richness and body. Together with a masterful distillation process, these ingredients create an incomparable experience of purity accented by a clean and refined taste.

The Ghost

Do you believe in ghosts?
How about werewolves and vampires? Regardless of your stance on the supernatural, you're sure to run into a few at the end of the month! That's right, October is here, and with it, the creepy crawly holiday we call Halloween. Some will spend the night taking their little baby monsters door to door for tricks and treats (hopefully more treats). Some will spend it downtown during the great annual Monster Mash of B'more. And some, some may spend Hallow's Eve locked away in their houses, afraid and hiding from the ghouls, goblins, and things that go bump in the night. To these people we offer a solution to the impending night of terror: Instead of cowering beneath the sheets with your creaky doors bolted shut, we recommend that you "trick" the undead. See, on Halloween all the skeletons, mummies, and poltergeists may look like they're out to get you, but in fact, they only attack those who aren't attending the graveyard galas across the country. When you hear the scratching at your windows, know that they are only checking to see if you're getting ready for their cryptic celebration. If you prepare a devilish cocktail and slowly sip the other-worldly potion you can trick the monsters into thinking you're hip to their soiree. Our studies show that the most effective libation is what we like to call The GhostHere's the recipe (all the ingredients will be on sale through the month of October here at Quarry Wine & Spirits, except the half-and-half which is available next door at The Fresh Market)...

The Ghost
1 1/2 oz Etalon Vodka
1/4 oz Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur
1/4 oz Half-and-Half
1/4 oz Simple Syrup

Add all ingredients to a shaker filled with ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass rimmed with white chocolate. Garnish with dark chocolate shavings (optional).

Spiced Almond

What rhymes with amber? September! Well, okay maybe that's a stretch, but there's no denying that the -ember months are upon us. That means one last hurrah for summer. But with the days getting shorter and the evenings becoming cooler one might need a bit more than a beer or another margarita to satisfy the palate and comfort the soul. So we found a drink with a strong backbone, yet at the same time, with a light, silky, and refreshing quality. If this drink were a boxer it would be Oscar de la Hoya. Here's the recipe (all the ingredients will be on sale through the month of September here at Quarry Wine & Spirits, except the cranberry juice which is available next door at The Fresh Market)...

Spiced Almond
3/4 oz Bacardi Oakheart Spiced Rum
1/2 oz Disaronno Amaretto

Bacardi Oakheart Spiced Rum is a tribute to the legendary and modern day adventurer. It honors their core essence; a fierce loyalty, stout-heart and unwavering resolve. When it comes to cocktails, no summer libation is more familiar than the margarita. But we're not talking about the frozen family restaurant version. We're talking fresh, handmade, classic margaritas on the rocks. Don Q Mojito

Have you ever wanted to teleport? Well, we've figured out how. It's really easy actually. Just follow our five step process... First, you find yourself a vessel, preferably one made of glass. Second, put into the vessel all the secret teleportation ingredients (to be revealed below). Third, within the vessel, all the teleportation ingredients must enter a state of fusion. This can be accomplished by placing the vessel in an industrial strength oscillator, or simply by using brute force. Fourth, the fused ingredients must be sufficiently chilled and blended with H2O, C2H5OH, and CO2. Finally, close your eyes, consume the contents of the vessel, count to three, and voilà, you'll teleport to a remote island in the Caribbean! That's right, we've found the secret to teleportation, and it comes in the form of this month's Cocktail Corner drink: The Don Q Mojito. Here's the recipe (all the ingredients will be on sale through the month of June here at Quarry Wine & Spirits, except the mint and the lime which are available next door at The Fresh Market)...

Don Q Mojito
1 1/2 oz Don Q Cristal Rum
1/2 oz Fresh Lime Juice
10-12 Mint Leaves
1 tsp Simple Syrup
Club Soda (optional)

In tall glass add mint, lime juice, and simple syrup, then muddle ingredients. Add ice and Don Q Rum then top with soda water (optional).

Don Q Rum uses a multiple distillation system to produce a cleaner, more refined, and more delicate flavor profile. So a Don Q drink will sip smoother than a drink made with another rum. It's also aged in American White Oak barrels to impart a touch more smoothness.

VeeV Skinny Acai Lemonade

Remember warm days? They're right around the corner, we promise. And when the weather gets warm, there's nothing like a refreshing glass of lemonade, especially lemonade made from VeeV Açaí Spirit. This month's cocktail is the Skinny Açaí Lemonade made with VeeV and Agave Nectar. Not only does the lemonade taste great, but it's good for the waistline too. No need to worry when relaxing on the beach with this drink in hand; because the drink uses Agave Nectar as a sweetener, Skinny Açaí Lemonade is a healthy alternative to the usual suspects of spring and summer sugar filled cocktails. Here's the recipe (all the ingredients will be on sale through the month of April here at Quarry Wine & Spirits)...

1 1/4 oz VeeV Açaí Spirit

2 Lemon Wedges (squeezed)

Baby Blue Manhattan

The Manhattan. One of the classic American cocktails. Traditionally made with rye whiskey, the original Manhattan has inspired quite a few variations. One such variation we found particularly interesting was the use of Balcones Baby Blue Corn Whisky with Vya Sweet Vermouth. Here's the recipe (all the ingredients will be on sale through the month of March here at Quarry Wine & Spirits)...

Baby Blue Manhattan
2 oz Balcones Baby Blue Whisky
3/4 oz Vya Sweet Vermouth
Dash Angostura Bitters
Combine ingredients in a mixing glass. Add ice. Stir well. Strain into a chilled stemmed glass. Garnish with a cherry. Enjoy!

Balcones Baby Blue isn't bourbon, nor is it white lightning. It is a unique corn whisky made from roasted Atole, a Hopi blue corn meal, which has been used by the Hopi for thousands of years. It has the freshness and verve of traditional corn whisky but with a refined complexity added by brief aging in oak. The result is a round nuttines with roasty overtones and a smooth finish.

Vya Sweet Vermouth is a unique aperitif invented by the dean of dessert winemakers, Andy Quady of Quady Winery in Madera, CA. It's the perfect ingredient for the highest quality mixed cocktails and it is an unbelievably delicious stand-alone aperitif.
